Animated Accounts (2023)

Animated Accounts is a collection of animated works by Mars Milo that explores various aspects of metoidioplasty surgery and transition effects on the body. The artwork takes a deconstructive approach to the subject matter, highlighting the level of time and consideration required for each element of bottom surgery before a trans man can achieve their end goal of acquiring a new penis.

The art piece is a short animation reel featuring negative photographs that document the changes in the artist's facial features as they underwent testosterone treatment leading up to their top surgery. The negatives are carved with white faces representing the identities that the artist has shed on their journey to becoming a confident man. The animation serves as a visual representation of the artist's personal transformation, capturing the physical and emotional changes they experienced during this significant period in their life.

Chipped Plaster is a striking and thought-provoking moving image piece, accompanied by original illustrative slides by Mars Milo who had undergone metoidioplasty surgery in February 2023. Through this artwork, the artist attempts to capture the physical changes that this surgery has on the original structure of trans men's genitalia. The piece features pen marks that scrawl out doodled instructive diagrams, which detail each stage of metoidioplasty. These diagrams are overlayed on top of a contact sheet that circles an original cast of the artist's genitals pre-surgery.

The pen marks in Chipped Plaster effectively demonstrate the planning and construction of surgery techniques behind the scenes of NHS practices. They serve as a testament to the meticulous preparation and attention to detail that surgeons employ in order to improve the success rates and patient satisfaction of trans-bottom surgery. By incorporating these diagrams into the artwork, the artist raises awareness of the complex procedures involved in this surgery, shedding light on the intricate planning and care that goes into it.

The cast of the artist's genitals pre-surgery in Chipped Plaster serves as a powerful symbol of the importance of considering each patient's unique anatomy in order to achieve the desired outcome. It also highlights the significance of the surgeon-patient relationship in this process, as patients must trust their surgeons to help them achieve their desired results.
